The Humble Bus Shelter
Who would have thought that the humble bus shelter would rise above the mundane and practical to an art form all of it’s own. Trevor Lee, one of our Canberra subscribers alerted us to Canadian photographer Christopher Herwig.
Christopher has published 3 books celebrating the expansive architectural legacy of Soviet-era bus stops and metro stations with dramatic styles ranging from lavish opulence to brutal futurist minimalism.
He travels former Soviet Republics from Ukraine to Uzbekistan, Armenia to Far Eastern Siberia, and all points in between, in a decades-long and passionate bus stop treasure hunt across more than 50,000 kilometres, uncovering the stories of the designers who built fascinating architectural marvels during the Soviet regime, Soviet Bus Stops is an ode to the power of individual creativity that would not be suppressed.1
He has photographed bus shelters that are sublime, sinuous, semi-circular, round and square shaped, ranging from spaceships, spiders and seagulls built out of timber, concrete or metal.
Browse through Christopher’s photos - never we will see the bus shelter as humble ever again!
Aren't they fabulous? Perhaps you have an unusual or interesting bus shelter near you?
Thanks Trevor!
