Europe - Idyllic Innsbruck

Innsbruck, which translates as the Bridge over the River Inn (which we came across in Passau), is the capital of the Tyrol region of Austria, with yet another atmospheric old town centre, set against a majestic backdrop of the Austrian Alps.

Innsbruck’s most famous landmark is a roof - not just any roof, this one adorned with 2,657 gilt copper tiles - The Goldenes Dachl, (little golden roof) sparkles in the sun and was commissioned by Emperor Maximilian I, to commemorate his wedding to Bianca Maria Sforza of Milan in 1494. These were the glory days, when Maximilian made Innsbruck his imperial capital for 500 years.

We visited yet another Swarovski shop - 3 floors of fabulous crystal jewellery and ornaments - no champagne on offer this time, but I did find a great ice cream shop close by.

We wound our way up into the alps to stay in small alpine town - Igls - again we are surrounded by mountains. It’s light till about 9pm, perfect for an evening stroll around this sweet town - the homes beautifully maintained, with spring flowers around.

We are on our way to Italy, a beautiful monastery and then Cortina.
