Reflection: Bravery

Following on from The Keeper's posts on David Oakley and his remarkable story of courage, determination and talent I thought today we would reflect on the bravery that many artists have demonstrated. Included in this list would be:

War Artists such as Nugent H Welch, Ben Quilty;
Disabled Artists such asSatish Gujral, Benjamin Russo;
Suffers of physical and mental illness such as Frida Kahlo.

and those who Dared to be Different such as Bulgarian artist Bianca Eshel-Gershuni.

You might also like to read this article Early Woman Artists Who Dared to Be Different by Jane Fortune featuring Giovanna Fratellini, Violante Siries Cerroti and Maria Hadfield Cosway who were three women artists who issued invoices in their own names and were accepted as members of the city’s historic drawing academy. The trio represents a unique example of women artists teaching or being taught by other women. Their works can still be seen in multiple venues in Florence today. It is time that these exceptional but little-known Florentine “exceptions”, finally get their due! 1
