Cairns Cathedral - Creation Windows

Following on from the posts on the Ferguson and Papas Stained Glass Jane remembered that during a visit to Cairns in 2005 a friend alerted me to the beautiful Creation Windows in St Monica’s Catholic Cathedral. The building itself is a simple design both outside and in, forming a wonderful backdrop to the 24 windows that line the interior of the church. Even all these years later I recall being enthralled with the originality and vibrancy of each stained glass window.

The Creation Windows installed in 2001 were designed and made by Gerry Cummins and Jill Stehn. They depict the story of creation taken from the Book of Genesis.

The windows start at the front right of the sanctuary, flowing and unfolding around the cathedral while incorporating the Peace Window^.2

All 24 of the Creation Windows The first six windows were deliberately designed and painted to be dark, taking their inspiration from Genesis 1/6:8: (2)

^The Peace Windows, installed much earlier in 1995 were also designed and made by Gerry Cummins and Jill Stehn. These windows celebrate the fifty years of peace in the Pacific region since the end of WWII.
